Gym Snack Ideas: What to Eat Before and After Your Workout

ITUMELENG M. MATLOU

You don't need a meal-prep container full of chicken and rice to fuel a good workout. Sometimes the best gym snack is the one that's already in your bag. No cooking, no cutlery, no mess. That's exactly what our range at Heart and Crunch is built for: real, simple ingredients you can grab on your way out the door.

Here's how to snack smarter around your training, using products from our own shelves.

Before your workout: quick, easy energy

In the 20 - 30 minutes before you train, your body wants energy it can use fast. Not a heavy meal sitting in your stomach through your whole session. Naturally sweet dried fruit is ideal here, since it digests quickly and gives you a steady lift without the crash of processed sugar.

Good options to keep in your gym bag:

  • Dried Apricot or Dried Figs - naturally sweet, a good source of fibre.

  • Dried Apple Rings - no added sugar, light and easy to eat on the move.

  • Peanuts and Raisins - a classic salty-sweet combo for a bit of staying power.

    • Chocolate Raisins - if you want a treat that still gets you out the door.

A small handful (about 30g) is plenty. Enough for a lift in energy without feeling weighed down on the treadmill.

After your workout: protein and healthy fats for recovery

Once you're done training, your body is looking for protein and good fats to help with recovery, and this is where nuts and seeds really earn their place in your bag.

    • Salted Cashews or Unsalted/Raw Cashews - high in protein and healthy fats.

    • Pistachios - protein, fibre and antioxidants in one snack.

    • Roasted Salted Pumkin Seeds - rich in healthy fats to help you refuel.

    • Chia Seeds - stir a tablespoon into a post-workout smoothie or yoghurt for an easy protein and omega-3 boost.

For flavour that keeps you coming back

Plain nuts are great, but sometimes you want something with a bit more kick. Our Cashews Peri-Peri  bring a bold, smoky heat to your snack drawer. Creamy cashews with a proper flavour hit, perfect for keeping things interesting between gym sessions.

Build your own gym trail mix

If you'd like to mix your own, here's an easy formula: one nut + one seed + one dried fruit,  all in one bag.

    Try combinations like:

    • Pecan +  Green Papitas + Dried Cranberries - nutty, earthy and tart.

    • Salted Cashews + Roasted Salted Pumpkin Seeds + Dried Apricot - savoury and sweet.

    • Natural Almonds + Linseeds + Dried Guava - a lighter, everyday mix.

Prefer something ready-made? Our Trail Mix Adventure Bundle and Protein Power Bundle are already built for exactly this - no measuring spoons required.

    A quick note on portions

You don't need a huge serving to feel the benefit. Most of our nuts and seeds are designed around a 30g (or 15g of seeds) serving roughly a small handful. So a little goes a long way, whether you're snacking before a session or refuelling after one.
